I just started reading David Byrne's
Bicycle Diaries (thanks J.R.). I feel as though I have been invited to tag along on an adventure. It's lovely to pretend that I am riding through the streets of Berlin when I'm really shoulder to shoulder with Bostonians on the red line. Note: the last time I got on a bike in Germany I found myself in a bush soon after. Therefore I'm content to live vicariously on this one. Byrne also satisfies my appetite for brief history lessons. Just this morning I got some juicy details about the Stasi aka the former Ministry of State Security in East Berlin. Apparently they kept files on each citizen that contained actual segments of clothing and other personal objects. If a citizen went "missing", the contents of his or her file were presented to a dog who then sniffed around for them. So big brother had a larger swatch collection than Parsons!
Happy reading.
